DEFINITION

Air & Missile Defense (AMD) is the integrated mission of detecting, tracking, and defeating manned aircraft, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and hypersonic threats before they reach protected forces, populations, or infrastructure. Operations combine long-range surveillance radars, midcourse and terminal interceptors, and layered command-and-control across services and allied partners — from Patriot and THAAD at the theater level to Aegis at sea and Sentinel radars forward-deployed. The mission has expanded in the last decade as hypersonic glide vehicles, low-observable cruise missiles, and coordinated saturation attacks have compressed the timeline available to detect, decide, and engage.

WHY IT MATTERS

Adversary missile and aircraft threats cover ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic classes with overlapping ranges and speeds. Public DoD documentation describes air and missile defense as the combined effort that connects sensors, command-and-control networks, and interceptors into a layered posture protecting forward forces and homeland assets. The Missile Defense Agency leads homeland-focused work through Aegis Ashore, GMD, THAAD, and the Golden Dome initiative; service programs including Patriot, PAC-3, IBCS, and IFPC field the tactical and operational layers. Space-based tracking through the Space Development Agency's tranches supports cueing across the full threat set.
