Directed energy (DE) weapons deliver damaging or disabling effects via concentrated electromagnetic radiation. Two dominant families: high-energy lasers (HEL) that burn or cripple targets over seconds of dwell, and high-power microwave (HPM) systems that disable electronics in a single pulse. HEL systems are approaching fielded status for counter-UAS at short range and are being scaled toward counter-rocket and counter-cruise-missile applications. HPM systems (Epirus Leonidas, Boeing THOR) target drone swarms and other unmanned systems. DE's central attraction is per-engagement cost measured in dollars rather than the thousands or millions of a kinetic interceptor.
