Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Counter-UAS)
Counter-UAS is the mission of detecting, identifying, tracking, and defeating unauthorized or hostile unmanned aircraft. Operations combine layered sensing — radar, RF, and electro-optical — with electronic-warfare and kinetic defeat effects, coordinated through common command-and-control systems. The threat set spans commercial quad-copters through military-grade Group 3+ drones, engaged across military, homeland-security, and critical-infrastructure contexts as small unmanned aircraft become cheaper, more autonomous, and more numerous on every battlefield.

Small unmanned aircraft are cheap, plentiful, and used across state and non-state actors. Public reporting from the war in Ukraine, the Red Sea shipping corridor, and the 2024 Israel-Iran exchange documents thousands of engagements against drones on both sides. Counter-UAS spans defense of forward troops, protection of airports and stadiums, security of critical infrastructure such as power grids and dams, and border enforcement. Systems fielded for one context often transfer directly to others, which is why the mission draws attention across the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and civil aviation authorities.
