PNT technology provides accurate position, navigation, and timing information for military and civil systems, most commonly through satellite constellations such as GPS and its international equivalents.

OVERVIEW

Positioning, Navigation and Timing covers the technologies that let systems know where they are, how to get somewhere, and what time it is with high precision. The Global Positioning System is the widely-used reference; peer international systems include Galileo (EU), BeiDou (China), and GLONASS (Russia). PNT is used in navigation, precision weapon targeting, communications synchronization, and financial transaction timestamping. Alternative PNT technology supplements or replaces GPS when signals are jammed, spoofed, or unavailable — including inertial navigation, chip-scale atomic clocks, celestial navigation, terrestrial radio navigation (LORAN successors), and vision-based positioning. Navigation warfare (NAVWAR) is the discipline of denying, protecting, and using PNT in contested environments. PNT is referenced in publicly-available architecture documents for programs including JADC2, NGAD, Sentinel, Golden Dome, and ISR systems across services.
