DEFINITION

Position, Navigation & Timing (PNT) is the mission of delivering assured location, navigation, and precise time signals to military and civil users, especially in GPS-denied and GPS-degraded environments. The mission spans GPS III/IIIF space vehicles, M-code military-grade encrypted receivers, ground control segment upgrades, and a fast-growing alternative-PNT portfolio (celestial navigation, visible-light communication, inertial + magnetic anomaly sensing, quantum clocks and atomic-clock timing). Ukraine has demonstrated at scale what DoD has warned about for a decade — GPS jamming and spoofing are now routine in contested airspace, and every precision munition, comms link, and financial transaction that assumes GPS is a fragile assumption.

WHY IT MATTERS

PNT is a shared dependency across defense and civil infrastructure. Aircraft navigation, precision munitions, encrypted radios, cellular networks, power-grid timing, financial-transaction sequencing, and autonomous vehicles all assume GPS-quality PNT. Russian jamming in Ukraine, Iranian spoofing of ships in the Persian Gulf, and Chinese anti-satellite demonstrations have all moved PNT from a comfortable assumption to a contested battleground. DoD's Assured PNT strategy makes alternative-PNT (ownership independent of GPS) a first-class investment priority.
