Quantum sensors exploit atomic-scale properties (spin, superposition) to measure magnetic, gravitational, or timing signals with precision beyond classical limits.

OVERVIEW

Quantum sensing applies quantum-mechanical effects to instrumentation. Three families are moving toward defense applications: atomic clocks (precision timing, GPS-denied navigation), magnetometers (submarine detection, underground structure characterization), and gravimeters (buried structure detection, inertial navigation). U.S. quantum sensing research and development is distributed across DARPA, IARPA, service laboratories, and commercial firms including ColdQuanta, AOSense, and Q-CTRL.
