OVERVIEW

Secure communications covers the technology families that connect distributed forces: tactical radios (SINCGARS successors, HMS, Mid-Tier Networking Vehicular Radio), Link 16 and other tactical data links, satellite communications (SATCOM — MUOS, WGS, commercial LEO options), mesh networking, and line-of-sight microwave. Secure comms combine encryption, spread-spectrum waveforms, low-probability-of-intercept and low-probability-of-detection design, and increasingly software- defined radio flexibility. Modern architectures emphasize resilience through diverse paths — a single node uses SATCOM, terrestrial mesh, and directional line-of-sight as complementary options rather than single primary + backup. Publicly-referenced architectures include Air Force ABMS, Army Integrated Tactical Network, Navy Project Overmatch, and joint efforts under CDAO.
