DEFINITION

Space Domain Awareness (SDA) is the mission of detecting, tracking, characterizing, and predicting the behavior of every object in the space domain — from low Earth orbit through geosynchronous and cislunar space. SDA combines ground-based radars (Space Fence, GEODSS), electro-optical telescopes, space-based observers (Silent Barker, GSSAP), commercial data feeds, and behavioral analytics that flag anomalies like unannounced maneuvers, rendezvous-and-proximity operations, or dual-use payloads. As the object catalog approaches 50,000 tracked items and the strategic competition in space grows more contested, SDA feeds both attack warning and post-event attribution.

WHY IT MATTERS

Space is now a warfighting domain, and Space Domain Awareness is the equivalent of what radar was to air combat in 1940 — the sensor grid you must have before you can defend, attribute, or engage. Chinese and Russian counterspace demonstrations (RPO operations, on-orbit ASAT weapons, laser dazzling) elevated SDA from a catalog-maintenance activity to a real-time indications-and-warning mission. Commercial actors (LeoLabs, Slingshot, ExoAnalytic) are now integral to the unclassified layer of the SDA picture.
