DEFINITION

Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) is the mission of degrading, neutralizing, or destroying adversary integrated air defense systems (IADS) — surface-to-air missiles, early-warning radars, engagement radars, and the command-and-control fabric that ties them together — so friendly aircraft can operate inside contested airspace. SEAD combines HARM-class anti-radiation missiles, EA-18G Growler and F-35 stand-in jamming, MALD-class decoys, cyber effects against IADS networks, and cruise missile strikes on fixed nodes. In an era of S-400/S-500-class Russian systems, China's IADS around key targets, and proliferated MANPADS, SEAD is the enabling mission for every other air-delivered capability.

WHY IT MATTERS

SEAD is the connective tissue of every air campaign against a peer adversary. Without it, F-35s can't strike, tankers can't loiter, ISR platforms can't stare, and airborne C2 can't operate. Russian and Chinese IADS have gotten harder over the last decade — longer range, networked with counter-stealth radars, more mobile — while the US SEAD force is aging (Growler recap, HARM successor programs). The Israeli campaign against Iran's air defenses in 2024 and the Ukrainian pattern of degrading Russian S-300/S-400 nodes are the current-generation SEAD case studies.
